What Is Podiatry

Podiatry is a special branch of medicine that focuses on our feet, ankles and lower legs. Podiatrists are experts who understand everything about the bones, muscles, and skin in these areas. They know exactly how to take care of your feet so that you can return to walking, running, and playing without any worries.

Common Foot Problems

Our feet are incredibly important because they carry us everywhere we go, and sometimes they can have problems:

1. Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edges of the nail grow into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. This condition can be caused by improper nail trimming, tight shoes, or injury. In severe cases, the affected area can become infected, leading to more serious complications if not treated promptly.

2. Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition where the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed. This inflammation causes sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially when you take your first steps in the morning. It can result from excessive walking, running, or standing, as well as wearing unsupportive footwear.

3. Bunions

Bunions are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of your big toe. They can be very painful and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. Bunions often develop from wearing tight, narrow shoes or from inherited structural defects. Symptoms include swelling, redness, and soreness around the big toe joint.

4. Flat Feet

Flat feet, or fallen arches, is a condition where the arches of the feet are low or absent. This can cause pain and affect the way a person walks, leading to issues in the knees and hips due to misalignment. Flat feet can be congenital (present from birth) or develop over time due to ageing, injury, or conditions such as arthritis.

How We Can Help

Our podiatrists have many tools and tricks to fix these problems. For bunions, they can provide special shoes or inserts to make walking easier, and in serious cases, they might perform surgery. For plantar fasciitis, they might recommend stretching exercises, special insoles, or even physical therapy to help your feet feel better. Ingrown toenails can be fixed by carefully trimming the nail and sometimes performing a small procedure to prevent it from growing back into the skin. For flat feet, our podiatrists can create custom orthotics, which are special shoe inserts that support your arches and make walking more comfortable. Explore our range of podiatry services:
